Why This Matters

Tourism is more than hotels, attractions, and events — it’s the way a community welcomes people into its story.

In Kalispell, every interaction helps shape how visitors experience the Flathead Valley. From hotel front desks and restaurant teams to outfitters, guides, shop owners, museum staff, volunteers, transportation providers, and local residents, the people who welcome visitors play a direct role in strengthening community pride, supporting local businesses, and creating memorable experiences that encourage guests to return.

As the gateway to Glacier National Park and a vibrant destination in its own right, Kalispell offers visitors a unique connection to outdoor adventure, local culture, downtown experiences, family-friendly activities, and the natural beauty of northwest Montana.

That’s why Discover Kalispell partnered with Learn Tourism, a nonprofit organization focused on tourism education and workforce development, to create this learning experience.

This program was designed to help participants:
* better understand Kalispell’s tourism ecosystem and visitor economy
* build confidence in recommending local experiences, businesses, attractions, and hidden gems
* strengthen communication and hospitality skills
* create more welcoming, inclusive, and helpful visitor interactions
* support responsible tourism growth that benefits residents, businesses, visitors, and the broader Flathead Valley

Research consistently shows that destinations thrive when communities are engaged, informed, and empowered to participate in the visitor experience. Tourism education helps transform everyday frontline interactions into meaningful moments that leave lasting impressions on travelers while strengthening local pride and economic opportunity.

By participating in this program, you are becoming part of a broader movement to help Kalispell remain a welcoming, vibrant, connected, and responsible destination for visitors and residents alike.

The Learn Tourism Approach to Destination Training

This Kalispell learning experience was developed using the Learn Tourism approach to tourism education: a research-informed methodology rooted in adult learning science, instructional design, behavioral psychology, and real-world tourism expertise.

Learn Tourism is a nonprofit educational organization that helps tourism entities deliver transformative, engaging, and accessible learning experiences for their stakeholders. Internal Learn Tourism language consistently frames this work around workforce development, destination engagement, visitor experience, and community pride.

Professional development for tourism and hospitality should do more than deliver information. Effective tourism training helps people feel confident, connected, and capable of applying what they learn in real visitor interactions. For a destination like Kalispell, that means helping participants understand how their everyday conversations, recommendations, and welcoming moments contribute to the visitor experience, the local economy, and the broader Flathead Valley community.

That’s why this program is built around three core principles:

Transformative

Tourism education should create real-world impact.

Participants should leave with new skills, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of how they contribute to Kalispell’s visitor economy, community identity, and destination experience. Whether someone works at a hotel, restaurant, shop, attraction, outfitter, visitor-facing business, or community organization, their role can shape how guests experience Kalispell, Glacier National Park, and northwest Montana.

Engaging

People learn best when they actively participate.

This Kalispell tourism training program was intentionally designed to encourage interaction, reflection, storytelling, exploration, and practical application. Instead of passive screen time or information overload, participants are invited to think about real visitor questions, local recommendations, hospitality moments, and the stories that make Kalispell memorable.

Accessible

Tourism education should meet people where they are.

This learning experience is designed to be flexible, approachable, and inclusive for learners with different backgrounds, schedules, roles, and levels of tourism knowledge. Whether someone is new to the visitor economy or has spent years welcoming guests to the Flathead Valley, the program supports practical learning that can be applied right away.

Behind the scenes, Learn Tourism applies research-backed methods in adult education, behavioral science, and instructional design to create learning experiences that resonate with tourism professionals, frontline teams, volunteers, business owners, community members, and destination stakeholders. Learn Tourism’s Custom Training Resource Book describes the organization’s mission as using science, business psychology, and adult education to build sustainable economies and enrich tourism communities.

Unlike generic corporate training, this learning experience was built specifically for the tourism and hospitality industry. Every lesson, example, and activity is designed around the realities of visitor engagement, destination storytelling, hospitality, local business support, and community connection.

In partnership with Discover Kalispell, this program helps create a stronger, more informed network of people who are prepared to welcome visitors with pride, empathy, and local insight. Together, Discover Kalispell and Learn Tourism are supporting a more confident, connected, and visitor-ready community—one interaction at a time.
